Thornton Creek Elementary students recently wrapped up Inclusion Week with a unique and exciting celebration—a Silent Disco! This special event not only promoted inclusion and accessibility but also rewarded students for their achievements during March is Reading Month.
A Silent Disco is an event where participants wear wireless headphones to listen to music rather than relying on traditional speakers. This setup allows students to control the volume and immerse themselves in the experience without overwhelming background noise, making it an inclusive activity for all students, including those with sensory sensitivities.
The initiative began at Hillside Middle School, which received a grant from the Northville Educational Foundation and Hillside PTA to purchase Silent Disco headphones. Hillside first used them to host its own Silent Disco, bringing together students from Hillside and Meads Mill Middle Schools for a memorable Inclusion Week event.
Inspired by this success, Thornton Creek reached out to borrow the headphones to host their own Silent Disco. The event served as a fun and engaging way to reward students who read the most books during March is Reading Month while reinforcing the values of acceptance, celebration, and accessibility for all learners.
With the success of these first two events, more Silent Discos are on the horizon across Northville Public Schools. As schools continue to embrace innovative ways to promote inclusion and student engagement, the Silent Disco is proving to be more than just a dance party—it's a celebration of accessibility, collaboration, and community.
