Classroom Close-Up: Ms. Johnson, Ridge Wood

For this Classroom Close-Up we took a look at Erin Grace Johnson's split classroom at Ridge Wood Elementary. Ms. Johnson has a split class of first and second graders. We joined her class during a math lesson where she split the students up by grade and did separate lessons for the students.

Hi. Welcome to Mrs. Johnson's class, we are combination class of first and second grade. We are in our math lesson today doing some measurement and we have some kiddos doing workplaces, our second grade group is at workplaces, first grade we're doing our lesson and then we'll transition and flip and I'll have second grade for their lesson and first will go to their workplaces. Come on in and see our math lesson in action. Alright first grade, so we're going to continue with our measurement unit today where we are using our number line to be able to place numbers and use them to figure out our word problems and story problems for today. We have Tad and Polly that we're going to add to our number line. But look at our number line. we don't have any of our numbers yet. We did our numbers a couple weeks ago where we had our number line all the way from zero to 20 and we had all of our cards here but now today we're going to make a new number line and our number line today we're going to have multiples of 10. I know. All the way up to 100 and then we're going to use that number line to solve some story problems today. Sometimes we have second grade recesses but our first grades come out and we go to different classes sometimes, like the second graders go to different classes when first grade stays here with our teacher. Right now we are at domino addition and we pick out a domino and then we write the numbers on our domino's and then we write down our numbers and then we write what it equals.
